Day 33 of 35: Cadiz, Spain
Our last port of this cruise is back on the Atlantic: Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz is often thought of as the most ancient continuously- inhabited European settlement, established by the Phoenicians as a trading port in the 7th century BC . It became the central port for mainland Spain & enjoyed a virtual monopoly of trade with the Americas until 1778. Today the Roman theater runs are still visible, from the time when Cadiz was the 3rd largest city in the entire Roman Empire. Tiled roofs & a Cathedral that spans several architectural styles attest to its diverse heritage. We didn’t explore the city much but did take a hop-on-hop-off tour to get an overview. The streets were narrow so we couldn’t take many photos but the parks along the seashore were beautiful & the old town was full of life.
We enjoyed learning about the city’s pedigree but were more captivated by the numerous packed public beaches & beautiful ocean.
