Day 10 of 35: Dubrovnik to Ston & Split
Today we drove from Dubrovnik to Split, stopping en route to briefly tour Ston.
Ston is famous for two things. The first is that it’s the second longest continously still-standing defense wall in the world, Devine only to the Great Wall of China The wall in Ston is only 6 km long, but is still very impressive. The second source of fame are Ston’s salt flats.

From Ston we drove to Split, a major destination among the coast. The seafront is dominated by The Riva, where people promenade to b see & be seen. Beyond that are the ruins of the retirement palace created for Roman Empire Diocletian. He’s known for many things – being the first Roman emperor to retire rather than being killed in battle or by his enemies; rising from poverty to become emperor; & stabilizing the empire with lasting peace. He was born on the Dalmatian coast so chose there for his retirement. It fell into disrepair over the centuries & only recently has been unearthed then developed for apartments, restaurants, & tours.

Our hotel for the evening was surprisingly elegant & roomy. All the hotels have had delicious breakfast buffets; this one had a particularly robust selection of little sweets to tempt us
